When researching SAM solutions, keep these questions in mind:

• Does the product have all the required SAM tools—discovery, usage metering, license repository—and a method of comparing asset deployment and usage with license requirements?
• How automated are the SAM’s features?
• How easy is it to deploy and use? Does it have a management console?
• How stable is the vendor? Will it be around for support and upgrades?
• Is there a clear path for incorporation into a CMDB?
• Can it integrate into a management suite, with remote controls, patch management, and other systems management functions?
